Each painting started out as a representational depiction of a
specific location. This was then developed into a subconscious
impression of 'place' through repeated bouts of abstraction and
recovery. The process of abstraction was used as a destructive
force, taking the painting to the limit of recognition. In contrast
the recovery re-introduced specific and tangible aspects of the
subject in a more representational form.
Ultimately a balance was struck between these extremes, leaving a
meditative, semi-abstract image that brought to mind our
subconscious sense of the world around us, being both clear and
specific and yet at the same time intangible and empty.
The tension between representation and abstraction explored by
these paintings was intended to mirror our actual relationship with
the environment, itself a balancing act between destruction and
renewal.
